Citation Styles Guide

This is a basic guide to citation styles. Different departments and courses at USAO require different citation styles, including MLA, APA, Chicago/Turbian, and CSE styles. If you ever write for a journal or magazine, you may find it has its own in-house citation style. Here are some points to remember, regardless of the style you use:

1) Use the right citation style required for your assignment.

2) Use a current edition of the style guide. If you use online tutorials or templates, make sure they are for the correct edition.

3) Cite all quotations you use from other sources, and cite all information you use from other sources unless it is common knowledge.

4) Make sure each citation includes all the information a reader would need to find the source.

Print and online citation guides are available for each form covered in this guide. We have some of these guides available in the library. If you need detailed information about a citation format, it may be worth buying your own copy of the guide.
